NetClear® Announces XGLAN™, 10 Gigabit Solutions for Advanced Network Requirements

January 12, 2004 - NetClear, the Berk-Tek/Ortronics alliance offering maximized dynamic performance for real world networks, announced today the launch of XGLAN™, a family of fiber and copper cabling solutions designed to support the advanced requirements of 10 Gigabit networks.

The XGLAN fiber solutions include recent advancements in the 50-micron NetClearMM1 and NetClearMM10 systems, and the NetClearSM system. The NetClearMM1 XGLAN solution features Berk-Tek's upgraded 50-micron GIGAlite™ multimode fiber and Ortronics OptiMo® multimode optical fiber connectivity. NetClearMM1 not only guarantees Gigabit Ethernet support to 750 meters, but also guarantees 10 Gigabit Ethernet support to 150 meters at the price of a standard 50-micron cable.

NetClearMM10 XGLAN solutions include Berk-Tek's GIGAlite-10 multimode fiber and Ortronics' OptiMo10G multimode (50/125) optical fiber connectivity to guarantee 10 Gigabit Ethernet support to 300 meters. In addition, the NetClearMM10 system now offers the industry's longest 10GBASE-SR, 850nm distance guarantee of 600 meters when installed using Berk-Tek's new GIGAlite-10XB optical fiber. "With the addition of the GIGAlite-10XB fiber option for NetClearMM10 systems we have effectively doubled the reach of an enterprise 10 Gigabit Ethernet backbone compared to what is currently specified by the IEEE standard for 850 nm serial transmission," stated Rob Rouse, Senior VP of Global Marketing and Products for Ortronics. "This provides our customers with the ability to utilize the most cost effective means for implementing 10 Gigabit Ethernet in their network over distances that are unmatched in the industry."

The NetClearSM XGLAN fiber optic solution combines Berk-Tek's singlemode fiber with Ortronics OptiMo singlemode optical fiber connectivity for support of campus networks as well as Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) utilizing 10 Gigabit Ethernet at distances up to 40 km and beyond.

For the most advanced enterprise LAN networks the NetClear alliance also announced the NetClearGT3 UTP cabling system's capability to support 10 Gigabit Ethernet transmissions. "Although no standard currently exists for the transmission of 10 Gigabit Ethernet over UTP copper cabling systems," said Todd Harpel, Director of Marketing for Berk-Tek, "NetClear engineers have been utilizing Shannon's Law for years to calculate the channel capacity of our cabling systems under various conditions." Shannon's Law is the equation defining theoretical maximum error free data throughput rate as defined in 1946 by Claude Shannon Bell Labs. "Through these efforts, as well as 10GBASE-T simulations done in partnership with Penn State University, we have been able to demonstrate that the NetClearGT3 cabling system has the ability to support 10 Gigabit Ethernet transmission," concluded Harpel. Consisting of LANmark-2000 UTP cable from Berk-Tek and Ortronics Clarity6 connectivity, NetClearGT3 also provides the industry's only field verifiable installed margin guarantees over Category 6.
